My 1997 Toyota Supra Turbo - Stereo

The installation on this stereo makes it sound incredible, and a special thanks to Glenn Peterson for the incredible installation.  This stereo has given me very little trouble since its install over 7 years ago.

I added a Rockford Fosgate 1998.5 Punch 45.2 Amplifier connected to a Phoenix Gold 1/2 Farad Capacitor in a custom mount. The mount replaced the area where the previous stock woofer was.  I had a 10" JL Audio W0 Subwoofer installed in a custom box built of fiberglass and wood. The beauty of this box is that my targa top still fits in the back of my car. The carpet is still at stock level.  The below picture was taken in a hurry, so it's kind of dirty (rubble on the carpet, bar not cleaned, etc.).

I replaced my stock head unit with an Alpine MDA-W890. That has a MiniDisc player and an in-dash 3-Disc Changer. The MD slot is behind the face.

As for batteries, I assumed Optima batteries were the trusted name in battery power. However, one full discharge, and red/orange/yellow tops become useless. When my car was driven everyday, these batteries were acceptable, but this is no longer the case. I am still researching whether I will need to upgrade to a high output alternator or not, now that there are many accessories (dual fuel pumps, sleu of electronics, etc.) that use power. I currently use a yellow top (Deep Cycle) Optima Battery. I had to do a little wiring work to get the battery cables to reverse.

The only problems I have had to date with this whole stereo setup are a blown subwoofer I replaced late in 2002, and a broken volume up switch on the head unit in April of 2003. I currently believe I am experiencing a similar problem with the volume down switch, as well. The date of manufacture on the head unit was December of 1997, so these problems were acceptable to me, given how long I have used and enjoyed this setup.
